If you had to go for a first book I would pick up the first book chronologically in the Drizzt series (It was not the first one written). Homeland, Book 1 of the Dark Elf Trilogy. You do not get to meet a lot of Drizzt's companions that journey with him through most of the books but it is probably the best written. Homeland

Read the drizzt series pretty much through high school. It's great for mass amount of content and for setting a pretty good bar for fantasy. Drizzt begins to get stale himself but I love almost every other character by Salvatore, especially entreri, drizzts' arch nemesis, he also has a wonderful side trilogy for him I might add.
